  • Jackie Paper

    Jackie Paper

    Finished my latest.

Assemblage dimensional mixed media piece- Primarily acrylic and paper on 18×24 canvas board.

I loved Puff the Magic Dragon as a kid.

The movie played on network TV at least a couple of times a year and I never, ever missed a chance to see it. It was like those Charlie Brown specials we grew up with as Gen-X that are now owned by the computer fruit company. I adored Snoopy and the gang, (let’s face it, was anyone really rooting for Charlie Brown? Especially when the World War I Flying Ace was behind enemy lines on his dog house???) but something about Jackie Paper really called to me.

It was a little sad. It was a little disturbing, how poor Jackie was locked inside his own head and couldn’t say a word until Puff showed him how to free himself. Sure, watching it now, I’d just be like, “Oh! Jackie has Autism!” but in the show the doctors had no idea what was wrong with Jackie, how to fix him or how to help him talk. They just gave his tearful parents the sad news, shut his bedroom door and left him to sit on his bed and stare at the floor, locked away, unreachable by anyone, even himself.
Until Puff comes to the window.

Those of you that know, know. Those that don’t, I will summarize. Puff pulls a ‘version’ of Jackie from inside himself. He tells him,” the living thing inside you- the thing that causes you to laugh, cry, care, and makes apples crunchy- is safely kept in your left ear. He pulls the living thing out of real Jackie and puts it into a life-size Jackie made of paper. This version of Jackie can talk. He can laugh, cry, care, brave pirates, sneezes, bake cherry pies and more. He can build boats with guitars and save fallen stars. In the end, he even saves a depressed Puff and Puff’s beautiful seaside home in Hona-Lee.

Before the cartoon, I remember going down the road to my friend Angela’s house… she lived next door to us on Blair Avenue, behind the cemetery in Camdenton. I couldn’t have been more than 3 or 4 years old. She had a record player in her room and we would play those little story books that chime for you to turn the page… and I’d beg her to play Peter Paul and Mary’s Puff the Magic Dragon over and over and over. I’m sure she got quite sick of it, but she was a sweetheart and indulged me anyway.

The song is much sadder than the movie. There’s really no happy ending. Jackie goes on adventures with Puff, braving pirates and meeting royalty while perched on the dragon’s tail. There are painted wings and giant rings, strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Then Jackie grows up and just stops coming to see Puff. Puff crawls into his cave, sad, alone and that’s it. The End.
I always felt it was a commentary on how we lose the magic as we grow up. Adult shit gets it the way and we forget where we put it, it gets boxed up, shoved aside, put away and we never pick it up again. Most of us anyway.
In the movie Jackie rescues Puff from the dismal Sneezes, everyone gets chicken soup, they sing happy songs. Then Jackie goes home and Puff puts Jackie Paper back into Jackie Draper and POOF! He can talk! He’s cured. He has suddenly remembered that apples are crunchy and that he can laugh, cry and care with the best of them. His parents are overjoyed. Puff winks slyly at the window like he knew this would be the outcome all along. Happy ending.

I work daily with autistic kiddos that are locked inside their heads in a similar fashion. I’m lucky enough to have never experienced the frustration and despair that must come with that particular affliction. I have had plenty of bouts of lonely depression, anxiety and not fitting in with other people in general in my life. I think most of us, even if you aren’t experiencing it on the level of Jackie Paper, you can still relate. Almost all of us have been faced with a fear or a struggle that made us feel isolated or at a loss for words, that seemed insurmountable on our own.

for my painting. A re-imagining of Jackie Paper from my beloved cartoon. Puff looks a bit more dragon-like, less cuddly and squishy than in the cartoon. I wanted the focus on Jackie though, so Puff blends well with the background. I used lots of metallics so that the painting looks different depending on your perspective and it looks VERY different in a low lit room vs with a light shining directly on it. The starfish light up and cast a glow, a nod to the star Jackie Paper saved from the jealous, ugly clouds when it fell from the sky into their boat. Of course, there is a pirate ship on the horizon. ๐Ÿ™‚

Jackie herself is on paper, added to the painting after the fact. I wanted her to look like a paper cut out. Her wings are layered paper gilded in silver. The swan and paper boats in front of her are all real origami, it was a challenge folding them that small! The boats are coated in crayon. This might be my only regret, but what’s done is done. The painting will now melt if exposed to high heat. But I wanted it authentic. Paper boats coated in real wax!

Danny has promised to make me a shadow-box style frame for it. We’ll have to have it fitted with a piece of glass. This should hopefully protect the paper and crayon parts from dust and yellowing over time. It will still have to be kept in a climate controlled space though.

The box of wax next to Jackie’s feet has several of the boat colors in it, tied up with real string. There are balls of real string at her feet. I wanted her wearing a sort of sexy girl Halloween pirate’s outfit, so she’s in black and red with a garter around one thigh. I thought about doing a hat, but I wanted you to be able to see her slightly haphazardly piled up hair. She’s barefoot, her hair is wild, she’s making paper boats with her friend Puff by her side. She very much looks like an adult, but hasn’t lost the magic of being a kid. She never forgot.

    And she never deserted him.

  • Chainmail!!!

    Chainmail!!!

We finally got a breather and some time to get creative work done! ๐Ÿ˜€

Danny has lots of chainmail available now and he’s working on more all the time.

I used Snoopy as a model. He doesn’t mind and makes a fabulous model. I’ve got a post about these up on Facebook already, so if you see something you’re interested in here and or have questions, please go like and follow our page on Facebook and message us there.

The necklace Snoopy is wearing is a chainmail weave called Celtic Visions. The Thor’s Hammer attached to it was purchased, but the chainmail necklace portion was 100% Danny’s. I thought this was a really gorgeous weave because it looks like an expensive piece of lace. It’s heavy made of traditional Stainless Steel rings, but it’s not uncomfortable to wear. I do usually save this one for special occasions though just because it is very much a statement piece when you have it on. This one is mine and not for sale, but PM Danny on https://www.facebook.com/DannysWildflower if you’re interested.

    Celtic Visions Chainmail Necklace

The top bracelet on Snoopy’s right arm, right leg and the three lying at his feet are all Half Persian 4 in 1 chainmail weave. Material is Anondized Aluminum. This material is lightweight, hypoallergenic and tarnish-resistant. Through an electrochemical process, the metal’s surface is covered into a durable, colorful finish that won’t chip, peel or turn your skin green. The best part about using it for chainmail is that it’s half the weight of stainless steel, so when you do weaves that use a lot of rings, it’s not weighing you down.

There are three colors here currently: Purple green, Black and Blue, Purple and Blue. If you’re interested in other colors, please send Danny a PM https://www.facebook.com/DannysWildflower. We’ll have these at the White Hart Renaissance Faire for $15 a piece.

The bright purple on Snoopy’s right wrist is one of my favorite weaves, this is a European 4 in 1. I like Danny’s use of the smaller, delicate rings on this one, because like my necklace above, it also looks a lot like lace. This purple really makes it pop too! This one is Anodized Aluminum also, so in addition to being very light and airy looking, it also feels very light and airy. This one is only $15!

    European 4 in 1 Chainmail

The thick bronze colored bracelet on Snoopy’s left arm is a Byzantine weave chainmail. It is also Anodized Aluminum and is available for $15. Danny wears a chain daily of this weave done in Stainless and let me tell you, that thing is HEAVY. I’m convinced you could use it as a weapon. This bracelet is nice and light though, in spite of looking very masculine and substantial. DM message Danny on FB for other colors. https://www.facebook.com/DannysWildflower

    Byzantine Weave Chainmail Bracelet

The bright purple bracelet on his left arm is Half Persian 4 in 1. This is a more delicate gauge than the ones at his feet, the smaller rings, while much more delicate looking and feminine, are also considerably more effort to work with, so this one is $25. Anodized Aluminum.

    Half Persian 4 in 1

On Snoopy’s left wrist is a Stainless Steel Bracelet is a 6 Ring Mobius Weave. These are 6 rings locked into a tiny rosette flower and then chained together. It’s delicate and feminine but very strong and has a nice weight to it. $30 While there is currently only one of these available, Danny will take orders through FB to make more. https://www.facebook.com/DannysWildflower

The Keychains are all Full Persian 6 in 1 in various colors. Anodized Aluminum. (This weave makes great bracelets as well). If you don’t see a color you like, DM Danny to make you one. These are only $5 and will go fast at the Faire!

On Snoopy’s right ankle is a stainless steel, 3 Ring Mobius. This is a lighter version of the 6 ring above, with 3 rings locked into a tiny rosette flower and then chained together. It’s delicate and feminine but very strong and has a nice weight to it. While there is currently only one of these available, Danny will take orders through FB to make more. Since it takes fewer rings, this one is $20.

3 Ring Mobius Weave Chainmail Bracelet
    3 Ring Mobius Rosette

On Snoopy’s left ankle is a Stainless Steel dual 6 Ring Mobius Rosette. This is like the heavier six ring rosette style above, except there are two rows woven together. This results in a thicker, cuff like bracelet of delicate, 6 ring rosettes. $45.

    Double 6 ring Mobius
    Double 6-ring Mobius

All inventory shown here is subject to change, as much of it will posted for sale at fairs on the weekend. If you see something you like, please DM Danny and see if it’s still available. If not and we have the rings in stock, he can make it immediately. If we don’t have a color or ring type in stock it may take a couple of weeks, but that’s doable too!

I’ll add more designs and things as he gets them finished. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Life is what happens…

    Life is what happens…

When you’re busy making other plans.

John Lennon wrote that in his song Beautiful Boy.

I’ve never found a song lyric to be MORE true.

We’re currently snowed in here and I’m just catching up on a few things I’ve ignored while I have nothing else pressing to do.

(This is not my photo and it’s not even Rolla, I just stole it from the internet.)

I’ve taken almost a year’s hiatus from painting, but I’m finally back at it- S-L-O-W-L-Y.
I get a few minutes in here and there between work and other stuff. I haven’t been feeling especially ambitious or inspired in that department for a while. I think part of the problem is I was content. Which I know, sounds counterintuitive, but…

Since I’ve been with Danny and the drama has calmed down, I’ve been really content to just BE. I don’t have the constant angst and need to escape my life I felt before, so I don’t feel the need to bury myself in projects to constantly escape from my life. Good for me. Maybe not so good for my art.

I’m gradually trying to squeeze in some time here and there to work on painting again. Aside from that I’m just focusing on getting things paid off, organized, etc. so when my kid is off to college, I’m off too- headed for our next adventure.

I figure THAT is when this site will really take off.

Until then, I just don’t have that much to tell you or talk about. I can’t even really discuss where I work or what I do. I post the personal shit on my Facebook account. And even that I don’t do very often.

So for now, this is just basically a placeholder.

Check back with me in 1 year, 4 months, 6 days, 19 hours and 45 minutes.

I’ll have LOTS to show you then. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Why Hello There.

    Why Hello There.

Danny’s Wildflower is new, but my crafting, gardening and making my own medicines/beauty products is not. I’ve been running the site Belle Of Dirt now for years. So why the change?
I’m in the middle of a divorce which has also led to a desire to revamp my entire professional image. I did things before under the name of my husband’s farm, which was never really my thing or a good fit for me. Under the farm site, I’ve always felt a bit like a weed in a cultivated garden- I was allowed to create and sell products that fit with the farm brand and image, but if it didn’t- well it wasn’t exactly forbidden, but frowned upon.

If you’ll forgive the cheesy sentiment- it’s time to get back to my roots and be the wildflower I was meant to be instead of trying to fit into the rose garden.

I’ll still be making cool salves from things I grow. I’ll still be painting sawblades and ornaments and gourds from the garden or anything else that will hold still and take paint. But I may branch out a bit from the farm scenes… explore my witchy beliefs a bit, throw a little magic in there.

So that covers the wildflower… what’s the Danny’s about?
For 24 years now I’ve known this man. I’ve watched him raise his kids and be a mentor to my kid. We’ve seen each other through ups, downs and so many versions of ourselves. Missed each other through very long absences. He was one of the first people I called when faced with real crisis and one of the only people I trusted with the care of my daughter. If I asked, there was no hesitation, he was just there for me. Why we didn’t try this sooner, I couldn’t say. Trying to live up to traditional values and standards perhaps, pure stubbornness on both sides, fear or hurting each other… I don’t know. Whatever reasons kept us apart, they are no longer.

Wherever the winds and rains take me from now on, I am his. I’m Danny’s Wildflower.

The runes on our logo are a nod to his Heathenism. I’m pagan… something or other. Not sure I have a definition for it now or if I ever will. It doesn’t fit into a neat box and I’m good with that. As I add posts to this page, you’ll see that I tend to ramble a lot… like this post. I also have a tendency to be somewhat random and spontaneous, but that makes for good art. ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope you’ll revisit us now and then to see what we’re up to, where we’re going and how we’ve grown.
